~This blog is about genre in media~

WHAT IS GENRE

Just like type of the media that you are watching, for example like tragedy, comedy or fantasy etc.

HOW DOES GENRE EFFECT MEDIA

For film specifically, they use genre as an introduction to market their fans (MARKETING TOOLS) and audience. Some people might be willing to watch horror, so they are more likely to watch horror film.

MIND MAP

rough classification about popular genre.

throughout the mind map, we might see that lots of genre are similar, and every film usually contain various genre.

As audience, we chould verify the films genre by its Director and Actors also.

IN THE HEAT OF THE SUN

1993 China

by JIANG WEN

Modern era, Childhood, Modern Literature

feature film

The first film that JIANG WEN wrote and directed, In the heat of the sun demonstrate the old era teenegars childhood in old Beijing citys.

The "youth memory" in movies often appears together with the "era memory".

It also has some similarities with similar movies, but the difference is that 'sunny days' are not just real memories, but more between vague memories and youthful fantasies.

The drama "Paris" tells the story of France in 1968, where two boys and a girl go together to the climax of revolution and youth before the May Storm.

The Beautiful Legend of Sicily "takes place in Italy during World War II, where a boy peers into the seduction and destruction of a goddess, like this chaotic land.

But due to the different environments in different countries, this era film in China is also vastly different from other countries. At that time in China, the enthusiasm for environmental integrity and revolution was unprecedentedly high, and director Jiang Wen was one of them, but he was still in his childhood. And this film perfectly portrays Jiang Wen's consistent film and television style, mixed with era films in display and imagination.

FILM CLIPS STUDY

yellow colour is the scripts translation (probably can't really tell the mood because of languange literature difference)

I chose a five minute segment between 11 minutes and 16 minutes in the entire film, which intersperses one of the most important plot points in the film and lays the groundwork for the protagonist's subsequent actions.

Next, I will analyze the camera techniques, editing techniques, miss en sense, and sound of this clip

Previous: The protagonist Ma Xiaojun became unrestrained after his father conscripted, and spent his days doing some dirty things with his friends, such as prying into other people's locks and stealing their bicycles. He was living in a rebellious period, doing nothing all day until he met Milan, a woman much more mature than him.

(blurry but can't see anything)

<come here>

At the beginning of the segment, Ma Xiaojun arrived at the room in Milan, where dim and low-key light scattered throughout the room, along with some warm tones, which were slightly different from the usual color scheme in the movie. The somewhat hazy colors combined with the lonely man and widow, as well as Milan's slightly hoarse tone, filled the atmosphere with hormones, and the young man in front of him even suppressed excitement and felt a bit overwhelmed.

The arrogant boy outside seemed a bit cramped and innocent at this moment, even though he still retained a bit of rebellious personality, it was completely covered up.

This is a clue shot, taking a very close look at the gift given by Milan. Ma Xiaojun's hand is holding her gift tightly. This gift also appears in later stories, but in this clip, it is the beginning of a dream (where the dream refers to a slight disorder in memory, and the montage clip begins)

<I always like to put what others do on my own>

Then there was Fade's cutting mirror, the tone becoming more blurry and warm, and the edges of these characters began to blur. The conversation between the two suddenly came to an end, but it was replaced by Ma Xiaojun's narrator from adulthood: My memory began to blur again.

And the telescope on this wall is also a clue that runs through the movie. Many people say that at the end of the movie, when Ma Xiaojun picked up this telescope again and looked into Milan's room, it was already a complete imagination. Just like the first time Ma Xiaojun looked at a photo of a Milan room and said, "That photo is clearly colored and wearing a swimsuit""No, it's clearly black and white, it's right here. "This memory bias can bring an additional authenticity, making people feel" real "from the distortion

<And I tried my best not to look at her unintentionally exposed body>

When the narration begins, filming and editing become a bit of a stream of consciousness. The narrator revealed Ma Xiaojun's inner self to the naked, with some dirty thoughts about the woman in front of him and a feeling of trying to restrain himself. The presentation method is melodious and slow background music, switching the camera back and forth between Ma Xiaotiao's eyes and Milan's sleeping appearance. It is unknown whether it is the hot weather or the hot and dry heart, causing the little boy in front of him to sweat profusely.

At the same time, the close-up of the faces of both of them can indeed reveal a completely different feeling. Ma Xiaojun stared blankly for a moment, then involuntarily turned away; Milan, on the other hand, kept their eyes closed for a moment and then firmly fixed on Ma Xiaojun. This also reflects the differences in age and mood between the two individuals.

<Maybe she never slept in front of me before>

As these imaginary lines become more numerous, fade-cut also becomes more frequent and cuts become slower, allowing the audience to clearly fade out. The sunlight emitted a more orange glow through the curtains, and at this moment, Ma Xiaojun (narrator) also asked himself if he had mistaken his memory again, mixing his delusions with his real memories.

<So how did her sleeping appearance come to my mind?>

Ma Xiaojun and Milan often play and dance hand in hand in the room. This is Ma Xiaojun's most beautiful memory, but it is a chaotic memory. In the heavily overexposed backlight scene, Milan stared at Ma Xiaojun with an awl like gaze, grinning. It was a taste that only a young girl could have, and it was also a dream fabricated by disordered memories.

The addition of the same filters and colors, like Milan's smile, with his back facing the sunlight, is a bit blurry. But following the meaning conveyed earlier, people cannot help but doubt whether this is a true memory.

<Hey, come upstairs with me>
